Stone Her

By Gerald Sumeracki

They had become an angry mob, All gathered round the one, Who had been found to be with sin, From them she could not run. They picked up stones as large they could, To do what God's Law said, To stone this sinner for her deed, For lusting one who'd wed. The Jewish priests did think they'd use, This common ugly scene, To trick the man named Jesus Christ, Who cared, was never mean. "What do you say Oh Holy One? "Did Moses tell us true? "Should we cast stones on such as she?" Their hearts the Lord full knew! Jesus took a little stick, And in the dust He wrote, The words that did convict them all, Who'd judge this one by votes. "Let him of you who has no sin," Said Christ unto those there, "Cast a stone to end her life--" Yet none of them did dare. For in their hearts they knew the truth, That Christ's words were for all, None have the right to judge their peers, For sins on which men fall. That God alone can judge the heart, They all did see that day, As each did drop their stones and leave, The spot where Christ did stay. "Where are they now, who'd have your life?" Did Jesus ask the lass, "They all are gone!" she said to Him, As stood they on the grass. "Then go your way and sin no more" Said Christ with gentle nudge, "If lowly man condemns you not, "Then you our God won't judge."
